Hi everyone, I just joined the forums and thought I'd say hi. I was referred here by Porsche944Turbo on the Rennlist Forums.

My daily driver is an '04 Silver Subaru WRX, lightly modified with a Cobb Stg. II ECU reflash, catless uppipe, TurboXS catless downpipe, and catback exhaust. It's also got numerous cosmetic and electronic mods.

My current project is an '86 Porsche 944 Turbo (951) that I got a year or so ago. I'm about to reinstall the engine after cleaning it up, replacing gaskets, hoses, etc. This is my first big horsepower build, so I'm pretty excited. Hopefully I'll have it running within the next month.

I'd like to make a few meets and get to some a few more local car nuts. Especially if this engine doesn't start up after the reinstall!!

Hey Synth!

Glad to see you made it.

Now I have someone local that can fix my top end anytime I blow the HG.

:p

Sorry no pics yet. I was preoccupied with engine work on the 951 all weekend. I think I'll be at CiCi's tonight though so hopefully I can meet a few of you.

@ Porsche, no problem man, after messing with my engine for the last 6 months I can handle a head gasket no problem!

What kind of condition is it in?

You just getting it to stock running condition or doing a bunch of upgrades?

I got it about a year ago from a previous owner who did little to keep it in good running order. I think he would just attempt to fix things as they broke. I towed it home because it didn't have oil pressure, which I eventually figured out was a broken oil pickup tube.

The broken pickup tube led me to pull the engine, and over the last year I've decided to do a lot of "while im in there" repairs. Replacing all the hoses and vaccuum lines, new seals all over the place, and rebuilding the steering rack were some of the basic maintenance. But, yeah, I've ended up doing a whole lot of upgrades while im at it.

Lindsey Racing Sport 61 turbo, 2 piece crossover pipe, dual port wastegate, 3" downpipe, 4" exhaust with Borla XR-1, LR MAF stage II, MAFterburner, Innovate LC-1 & XD-16 wideband, MaxHP chips, high flow fuel pump, 72# flow matched seimens injectors, oil pan baffle, wide fire head gasket, manual boost controller, 3 PSI fuel regulator, and a stage 3 SPEC clutch and pressure plate. There might be more but that's all I can think of.

I hope to have the engine running in a week or two, but we'll see. Once I get it running well, I plan to do the brakes, wheel bearings, and suspension. Lastly will be cosmetics, it has some damage to the rear driver quarter panel and most of the rubber seals are degrading.

Awesome!

Yea, I was hoping you would say you are doing the standard upgrades while you are int there. :D

It seems every time I get ready to install an upgrade, something breaks and I have to fix that first, etc. etc.

Like yesterday I just developed a boost leak somewhere. I know my headers have a leak, but that was only affecting spool up. Now I have a full leak that is pulling 2-3psi from full boost.

If you have all that work to do on your car how will you find time to work on mine???? LOL

I'm really hoping to avoid having something break every other week once I get this back together.

Have you replaced all your vaccuum lines and coolant hoses yet?

what upgrades have you done?

Synth

I had leaky headers too, they are a bit expensive to replace unfortunately. It seems like a really common problem on the 951s. They just underestimated the stresses involved in that part.

Yea, most of the engine and everything else is rebuilt or new. Top end after head gasket and bottom end after I spun a bearing. New turbo after the stock K26 got a piece of rubber sucked into it. Clutch after the fork/TO bearing, etc. went.

Mods:

1987 951, 18psi, LR Super 75 turbo, MAX Chips, 72# injectors, SAFC2 Neo, Hitachi 90mm MAF, TIAL, Innovative wideband, ARP head studs, MLS Cometic HG, Evo DV,Custom 3" cat (less) back, Flowmaster, headers-downpipe-crossover ceramic coated, Koni yellows front Bilsteins rear, Welt. 250lb springs,Turbo S rear torsion bar, Blaster 2 coil, 16x8 BBS wheels

Only had it dynoed once and that was with other chips so was a real rough tune and did 320-330whp/tq.

Not tuned out yet as the Innovative is new and not set up yet as I switched over from the Zeitronix. Once tuned I will run 20psi and should be close to 400whp.

I have springs (maybe) strut plates, strut tower brace and wheels (18x8 front 18x10 rear) all set to be put on once all parts have been delivered.

How do you like the Innovative?

Wow, nice, I didn't realize you had so much work into it. I haven't gotten the Innovative installed yet, maybe this weekend.

How's the Super 75 turbo? I was afraid to go too big, I didn't want to lose too much low end power.

The 75 is a bit laggy, but makes up for it in the top end. With no leaks and good tuning, I was getting 1 bar in 4th gear by 3,800-4,000. I think a stock K26-8 got 1 bar around 3,500. But with good tuning the 75 can flow 20-25psi all day with low EGT's.

Very nice, I'm a little unsure of how high I want to run the boost. right now I'm thinking 16-18 lbs, but I may try to go higher if it looks like the car may be able to handle it.

With my past GURU chips and current MAX chips both with this turbo and stock, I had no problems with 18psi. I know both chips did the fuel mapping for up to 18psi on pump. With MAX, he does up to 20psi for pump, but "doesn't recommend it". But off the record he will tell you it is fine. Just keep a good a/f (12 in the mid range and 11.5 up the redline), and you will be safe.

Hmm.... that's good to hear! I'll see if I can get it running well at 18 then work on cranking it up to 20.

I got the new strut plates/mounts in and strut tower brace with the new 18" wheels. Looks really good but now alignment is way off.

Also developed a high end hesitation. Plugs and wires are new but I know without the wideband runs I am running really rich for safety so hoping just fouled plugs.

Synth

Awesome glad to hear you got that stuff installed. Yeah, hopefully that's just the plugs.

I was close to finally turning the key on my engine install this weekend. I filled it with coolant, then was about to put the oil filter on when I noticed that it was filled with coolant where the filter attaches. Not good.

After some research though I figured out that it was because I didn't replace the seals on a little tube that passes throught the oil cooler housing so it was leaking pretty good. Seals should be here this weekend and hopefully I can start it up.

I'm in Wildewood back in the new section.

I got the seals replace and the coolant leak into the oil was gone! I got the fluids filled and started it up for a minute or two. It ran really rough, but it ran, lol, just needs some tuning I think. I fixed the leaks that showed up when everything pressurized, then tried to start it again. I killed the brand new battery from the day before, lol. So... it looks like the alternator is probably bad which wouldn't surprise me if its' the original. Sometime this week I'll pull it out and get it tested.

I'm a little disappointed that I gotta pull the alternator back out, but I'm also ecstatic that it started.

At least your making progress!! lol

I actually have a fuel control problem now. I thought it was just a boost leak and making the engine really rich, but it is worse now.

Idles ok, but is REAL rough unless I give it a lot of throttle and then when boost comes it it hesitate as if lean. So I guess there is just a flat fuel amount being added which is really rich off boost and not enough when on boost.

So I got my LM1 installed almost and just gotta do some data logs to see what is going on. I pretty much know the problem, but not sure what is causing the problem.

Almost as if my a/f controller or MAF was unplugged, but they are not. :?:

You may have to school me on using the A/F maps and such. I've never really tuned before, but I'll finally have the tools to do it. I've got the MAFterburner installed, and the Innovate will be soon.

I havn't used it, but I have heard the LR MAFterburner is a very user friendly system.

Tuning a/f alone with no timing changes is pretty straight forward. For the 951, you want about 12.5:1 for spool up and then rolling gradually richer to the higher revs leveling about 11.5:1, giver or take, from 5K to redline.
